Fence Building and Repair Tips
Fence Repair - broken post, missing pickets
Small damages to the fence, such as broken post or broken pickets and rails, can be repaired by fortifying the sections of the fence
with additional boards, pieces of wood or setting up a new post right next to the broken post.
Fence Repairs - Pickets
Fence Repair - Horizontal rail
Building the new fence
Here is how to build a new 6 foot privacy fence:
Materials
- posts
- horizontal rails (3 for each fence panel)
- pickets
- nails
- cement
|
Tools
- metal bar to break the ground
- post hole digger and shovel
- saw, nailgun or hammer
- mason's line, level, measuring tape
- safety glasses, gloves
|
Steps
- Pull the line between the corner markers and use it to mark the ground for the posts. This is to keep the fence straight.
- Dig the holes for the posts [7.5' + post width] apart. The holes must be at least 27" deep (24" for the post + 3"
for concrete base to put the post on). Poor in some water if the ground is too tough.
- Mix the cement according to the instructions on the bag
- Fill 3" at the bottom with concrete to prevent the post from rotting or sinking
- Put the post in and ensure it is centered, vertical and correct height (use the level, measuring tape and line against the other posts
already set).
- Pour the conrete around the post and set it straight.
- After all posts are set, wait about 24 hours for concrete to harden.
- Nail horizontal rails to the posts (use level and line). Rails should meet in the middle of the post.
Top rail should be 6" from the top of the pickets and bottom rail should be 6" from the bottom of the pickets.
- Build the fence panels by nailing the pickets to the rail (use line to keep the pickets at the same height)
